Chiropractic & the Neurodivergent Child: Supporting the Nervous System Naturally
Chiropractic care doesn't change how a child's brain is wired. What it does is support the nervous system that everything else, attention, regulation, sensory processing, sleep, runs through.

Quick answer: Neurodivergent children, those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, anxiety, and related conditions, have nervous systems that work differently. At Vibra Chiropractic, our work with these children goes beyond spinal adjustments. We also provide primitive reflex integration, targeted neurological work that helps retained reflexes complete their developmental journey so the nervous system can organize more effectively. For many neurodivergent families, chiropractic care combined with primitive reflex integration is one quiet but meaningful piece of a larger support picture.
When parents of neurodivergent children first reach out to us at Vibra Chiropractic, they often open with an apology. "I know this might be a stretch," they'll say. Or "I'm not sure if this is something you do." Sometimes they've already tried everything their medical team recommended and they're looking for anything that might help their child feel more settled, more regulated, more comfortable in their own body.
I want to start by saying: you don't need to apologize for that. Seeking every reasonable tool that might support your child's nervous system is exactly what a good parent does. And chiropractic, when approached honestly, humbly, and collaboratively, has something real to offer in that picture.
What neurodivergence actually means and why the nervous system matters
Neurodivergence is an umbrella term that covers a range of neurological differences, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory processing differences, dyslexia, dyspraxia, anxiety disorders, and others. What these conditions share is that they involve the nervous system processing information differently than what's considered typical.
This isn't a flaw. It's a difference. But it does mean that the nervous system of a neurodivergent child is often working harder, managing more sensory input, regulating more intensely, filtering more noise, than a neurotypical child's system. And a nervous system that's working that hard doesn't need additional burdens placed on it.
The nervous system is the foundation everything else rests on. When it's carrying extra structural load, from birth, from developmental patterns, from the cumulative stress of the body, that load is part of the environment the child is trying to function in every single day.
What we actually do for neurodivergent children at Vibra
At Vibra Chiropractic, our work with neurodivergent children goes beyond spinal adjustments. We also provide primitive reflex integration, targeted neurological work that helps retained reflexes complete their developmental journey so the nervous system can organize more effectively.
Retained primitive reflexes can contribute to dysregulation, sensory overwhelm, attention difficulties, and coordination challenges. When those reflexes integrate, real neurological change happens, not a change in who your child is, but a reduction in the neurological static that may be making daily life harder than it needs to be. This is not overclaiming. It is the actual mechanism of reflex integration work, and it is one of the most meaningful things we offer neurodivergent families at Vibra.
Chiropractic adjustments address the structural and spinal component, reducing interference in the nervous system caused by restricted or misaligned joints. Primitive reflex integration addresses the neurological organization component. Together, they are a more complete and more powerful approach than either alone.
What families tell us they notice
The families who bring neurodivergent children to Vibra Chiropractic are typically not looking for miracles. They're looking for every reasonable piece of support and they've often heard from other neurodivergent families that chiropractic was something that helped. Here's what we hear most often:
Improved sleep — both ease of falling asleep and quality through the night
Reduced overall dysregulation — fewer extreme responses to sensory triggers
More ease with transitions between activities or environments
Reduced physical tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw — areas where highly sensitive children commonly hold stress
A general sense that the child seems more settled or more available for connection and learning
Improved tolerance for touch and body-based input over time
These are parent observations, not clinical outcomes. Every child is different. But these patterns are consistent enough across families that they're worth naming honestly, because parents of neurodivergent children deserve honest information, not hype.
The birth history piece
One of the first things I want to understand when a neurodivergent child comes in for an evaluation is how they came into the world. Birth history matters — perhaps more than most people realize — because the forces of labor and delivery can create tension in the upper cervical spine and cranial base that influences nervous system function in ways that persist long after infancy.
For children who were born after prolonged labor, vacuum or forceps assistance, emergency cesarean, or who were in a difficult position — there may be structural tension present since day one that has been quietly affecting how the nervous system develops and functions. This doesn't explain neurodivergence. But it's a piece of the picture worth evaluating.
How we approach visits for neurodivergent children
A good pediatric chiropractor adapts to the child, not the other way around. Here's what that looks like at Vibra:
We explain everything before we do it — no surprises, no sudden movements
We go at the child's pace and follow their cues throughout the entire visit
We never force contact — if a child isn't ready, we wait
For highly touch-sensitive children, we start with the lightest possible contact and build familiarity over multiple visits before completing a full assessment
We keep the environment as predictable and low-stimulation as possible
We include the child in the process — explaining what we're doing in age-appropriate language and giving them as much control as possible
We communicate openly with parents throughout, and always debrief after the visit about what we observed and what we're thinking
The relationship and trust come before everything else. A child who doesn't feel safe in our office will not benefit from being there, and we know that.
Who we work alongside
For neurodivergent children, chiropractic is most meaningful as part of a collaborative team. The providers we most commonly coordinate with:
Occupational therapists — our most frequent collaborators for sensory processing and regulation support
Speech-language pathologists — for children with communication, language, or feeding components
Behavioral therapists and psychologists — for the cognitive and behavioral dimensions that chiropractic doesn't address
Developmental pediatricians and neurologists — the medical leads for diagnosis and medical management
Feeding therapists — particularly for children with significant oral sensory challenges
We never position chiropractic as a replacement for any of these. We see our role as one supportive piece in a picture that usually requires many providers working together.
You don't have to have it all figured out to come in
If your child has a diagnosis, or is in the process of getting one, or you simply know that their nervous system needs more support than typical approaches have provided, come in. We'll do a thorough evaluation, have an honest conversation about what we find, and tell you plainly whether we think chiropractic and primitive reflex integration have something meaningful to offer in your child's specific situation.
That's all we're offering. Honest assessment. Gentle care. And a genuine commitment to being one useful part of your child's village.

At Vibra Chiropractic, our work with neurodivergent children includes both chiropractic adjustments and primitive reflex integration. Chiropractic adjustments reduce structural interference in the nervous system, creating a cleaner environment for a system that is already working hard. Primitive reflex integration addresses retained reflexes that can contribute to dysregulation, sensory overwhelm, attention difficulties, and coordination challenges — and when those reflexes integrate, real neurological change happens. Many families report improvements in sleep, regulation, and overall settling with consistent care as part of a broader support approach.
-
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns present from birth that are designed to integrate during the first year of life. When they don't fully integrate, they can remain active and contribute to dysregulation, sensory overwhelm, attention difficulties, and coordination challenges that overlap significantly with neurodivergent presentations. At Vibra Chiropractic, we offer primitive reflex integration as part of our pediatric care — targeted neurological work that helps retained reflexes complete their developmental journey so the nervous system can organize more effectively.

Birth history is one of the first things we assess when evaluating a neurodivergent child. Difficult or assisted deliveries can create tension in the upper cervical spine and cranial base that influences nervous system function long after infancy. This doesn't explain neurodivergence — but it is a piece of the structural picture worth evaluating as part of a comprehensive nervous system support approach.

Yes. At Vibra Chiropractic we regularly coordinate with occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, behavioral therapists, developmental pediatricians, and feeding therapists. We see chiropractic care and primitive reflex integration as meaningful pieces of a collaborative care picture — never a replacement for the other providers on a neurodivergent child's team.
