What Is Subluxation? Understanding the Core of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractors use the word subluxation often. But what does it actually mean — and why does it matter beyond just a sore back?

Quick answer: A subluxation is a spinal joint that isn't moving properly, one that is restricted, misaligned, or both, in a way that creates mechanical stress on the surrounding nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. Subluxations don't always cause pain. In fact, many significant subluxations produce no local discomfort at all. What they do produce is interference in the nervous system, affecting how signals travel between the brain and the body, and how well every system the nervous system governs is able to function.
If you've ever been to a chiropractor or researched chiropractic care, you've almost certainly encountered the word subluxation. It's one of the most fundamental concepts in chiropractic — and also one of the most misunderstood, both inside and outside the profession.
At Vibra Chiropractic in Woodstock, GA, we believe that understanding what we're looking for and why is part of receiving good care. So here's a plain-language explanation of what subluxation actually means, what causes it, and why addressing it matters for your health in ways that go beyond just your spine.
What subluxation actually means
The word subluxation comes from Latin, sub meaning below or less than, and luxation meaning dislocation. In chiropractic, it refers to a spinal joint that isn't moving through its full, normal range of motion — one that is restricted, stuck, or misaligned in a way that affects the function of the surrounding tissue and nervous system.
This is an important distinction: a subluxation is not a bone that has slipped dramatically out of place. That's a dislocation, a traumatic, immediately painful, visually obvious event. A subluxation is subtler. It's a functional problem, a joint not moving the way it's designed to move, and its effects are often felt far from the joint itself.
The spine's job isn't just structural. It's the protective housing for the spinal cord — the pathway through which the brain communicates with every organ, tissue, and system in the body. When part of that housing isn't functioning well, the communication it protects is affected.
What causes subluxations
Subluxations develop from three broad categories of stress, what chiropractors often call the three T's:
The three primary causes of subluxation
Physical stress (Trauma) — acute injuries like car accidents, falls, and sports injuries; repetitive strain from poor posture, prolonged sitting, or asymmetrical movement patterns; the forces of birth for both mother and newborn; and the cumulative physical demands of daily life over time
Chemical stress (Toxins) — inflammatory foods, poor nutrition, environmental toxins, medications, and substances that create systemic inflammation and affect muscle tone and tissue health throughout the body including around the spine
Emotional stress (Thoughts) — chronic psychological stress that manifests physically as sustained muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, creating the muscular environment in which subluxations develop and persist
Most subluxations don't come from a single dramatic event. They develop gradually from the accumulation of everyday physical, chemical, and emotional stressors, which is why they can be present for months or years before they produce obvious symptoms.
Why subluxations don't always hurt
This is one of the most important things to understand about subluxation and one of the most counterintuitive. Pain is not a reliable indicator of spinal health.
Only about 10% of the nervous system is dedicated to transmitting pain signals. The other 90% governs everything else, organ function, immune regulation, digestion, hormonal balance, motor control, and the countless automatic processes that keep the body running. A subluxation can interfere with any of these functions without producing pain, because it's affecting nerve pathways that have nothing to do with pain transmission.
What subluxations can affect beyond pain
Immune system function — the nervous system directly influences immune response, and subluxations at certain spinal levels can affect the body's ability to regulate immune activity
Digestive function — the nerves that govern the digestive organs exit the thoracic and lumbar spine, meaning subluxations in those areas can affect gut motility, digestion, and elimination
Sleep quality — upper cervical subluxations affect the nervous system's ability to shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance, which is essential for restorative sleep
Energy and fatigue — a nervous system carrying structural interference uses more resources managing compensation than a well-functioning one
Mood and stress response — the nervous system's regulatory capacity is affected by the structural environment it operates in
In infants and children — subluxations can affect feeding, sleep, colic, developmental milestones, and the neurological foundation on which everything else builds
How subluxations are found and corrected
Finding subluxations requires a thorough spinal examination, assessing joint mobility, postural patterns, muscle tension, and neurological function. At Vibra Chiropractic, every evaluation looks at the spine as a whole rather than focusing only on where a patient reports discomfort, because the area of pain and the area of subluxation are frequently different.
Correcting a subluxation is what a chiropractic adjustment does. A specific, controlled force applied to the restricted joint restores its normal range of motion, reduces the mechanical stress on the surrounding nerves and tissue, and removes the interference that has been affecting nervous system function. This is why the effects of an adjustment are sometimes felt far beyond the adjusted area, because the nervous system pathways that were being interfered with serve the whole body, not just the local joint.
Subluxation and the chiropractic philosophy
The concept of subluxation is why chiropractic care, at its core, is about more than back pain. It's about the nervous system and the understanding that the body functions best when the nervous system can communicate freely between the brain and every part of the body without structural interference.
This is why we check newborns. This is why we check pregnant women. This is why we check kids at every developmental stage and adults who don't have back pain but know their body isn't functioning at its best. Subluxation can be present at any age, from any cause, with or without symptoms and addressing it is about supporting the body's fullest possible function, not just relieving pain.
At Vibra, that's the care we're committed to providing. Not just pain management, nervous system support. For every stage of life.

No — and this is one of the most important things to understand about subluxation. Only about 10% of the nervous system transmits pain signals. Subluxations can interfere with the other 90% — governing organ function, immune regulation, digestion, sleep, and hormonal balance — without producing any local pain. Many significant subluxations are found during routine chiropractic evaluations in patients who came in for an unrelated reason or no specific complaint at all.

Subluxations develop from three broad categories of stress: physical stress including trauma, poor posture, repetitive strain, and the forces of birth; chemical stress from inflammatory foods, environmental toxins, and systemic inflammation; and emotional stress that manifests as sustained muscle tension around the spine. Most subluxations develop gradually from the accumulation of everyday stressors rather than from a single dramatic event.

A chiropractic adjustment corrects a subluxation by applying a specific, controlled force to the restricted joint that restores its normal range of motion. This reduces mechanical stress on the surrounding nerves and tissue and removes the interference that has been affecting nervous system function. The effects of an adjustment are sometimes felt far beyond the adjusted area because the nervous system pathways involved serve the whole body, not just the local joint.
